Casual Encounters DVD Review

“Casual Encounters” is a watchable romantic comedy.

After a disastrous split with his girlfriend, Telecom worker Justin is encouraged by his friends to live a little by signing up for a website called Casual Encounters. Justin begins to use the site and proceeds to have some wild hook-ups. Amidst all of this, however, he begins to bond with a co-worker (Laura) and starts to wonder if she might the girl for him.

“Casual Encounters” is a short low, low budget indie comedy that unfolds like you think it will. It’s very much a mildly diverting, formulaic rom-com in which the main character has to figure out what he wants in life and who he wants to spend it with. With all of that said, it still manages to be a slightly charming observational comedy about the online dating world and all of the eccentricities that go along with it.

Writing aside, the reason “Casual Encounters” is worth a watch is due to the ensemble cast which includes Taran Killam, Brooklyn Decker, David Krumholtz, David Arquette, and Mark Boone Junior. The two leads (Killam and Decker) are particularly noteworthy here as you buy into their romance (no matter how forced it may be). The supporting cast (namely Krumholtz and Arquette) also prove to be fairly amusing as Justin’s pals. Without the cast, I’m not sure the movie would be able to stay afloat at all. Make of that as you will.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.35:1. How does it look? The picture quality is OK, but boy does this movie have cheap production values.

Audio Track: Dolby Digital 5.1. How does it sound? The track has very little to do since it’s largely a dialogue driven film, but it’s decent enough.

Extras: Lionsgate trailers, a digital copy, a “Casual Encounters” trailer, and two featurettes (Under The Covers and Single and Looking) that contain interviews, character discussions, and people talking about their dream matches.
