Shaun The Sheep: The Farmer’s Llamas DVD Review

Shaun The Sheep- The Farmer's Llamas DVD.jpg

“The Farmer’s Llamas” is a fun “Shaun The Sheep” adventure.

In the half-hour dialogue-free “Shaun The Sheep” special “The Farmer’s Llamas,” Shaun secretly sneaks into a local fair with the Farmer and Bitzer. While there, the mischievous Shaun tricks the Farmer into buying 3 rambunctious llamas. At first, Shaun and his sheep pals are excited by the presence of the llamas, but they soon regret that when the llamas begin to cause chaos. Can Shaun patch things up or will the llamas ruin everything in sight?

For decades now, Aardman Animations has been producing high quality films and TV series/specials and “Shaun The Sheep: The Farmer’s Llamas” is no exception. While the special is slight and light on plot in comparison to the charming feature film, it is nonetheless an entertaining Shaun special. It’s still amazing to me how the entire Aardman crew can make characters and situations so memorable and funny without the aid of dialogue. Just watch the soccer sequence or the llama house invasion to see what I mean.

Equally astonishing here is the artistry of the series. The details on everything from the character models to the vehicles never ceases to amaze me. They are truly the masters of stop-motion animation along with Laika.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.78:1. How does it look? The crisp clean stop-motion animation looks breathtaking even on DVD.

Audio Track: Dolby Digital 5.1. How does it sound? The DD track doesn’t have much to do given that the series is comprised of noises and music, but it’s still a solid track.

Extras:
* Lionsgate trailers.
* Digital copy.
* “Meet The Llamas”- A 4 ½ minute featurette in which crew members discuss the 3 Llama characters.
* “Behind The Fleece”- A 9 minute tour of the studio and its various departments. Interviews with various crew members are included.
* “The Director’s Perspective”- Director Jay Grace talks about the story of “The Farmer’s Llamas” over behind-the-scenes footage and special clips.
* 2 bonus short episodes titled “Cheetah Cheater” and “Zebra Ducks of the Serengeti.” ‘Cheetah’ revolves around the cat Pidsley pretending to be a Cheetah and ‘Zebra’ involves a misunderstanding about two ducks.

Overall Thoughts: Given that “The Farmer’s Llamas” is only a half-hour, there’s not a ton of content here (although there are 2 shorts and several bonus features). Still, if you adore “Shaun The Sheep” and collect every release, this is a must have for you.
