The Runner Blu-ray Review

The Runner Blu-ray

Run away.

In “The Runner,” Nicolas Cage plays a Louisiana Congressman (Colin Pryce) who is dealing with the fallout from the BP oil spill on the community and the environment. Colin nobly helps people in need and has grand ideas about green energy, but we quickly learn that Colin is no saint after he becomes embroiled in a scandal (he cheated on his wife). Not only does the scandal eliminate his immediate plan for running for senate, but it also predictably hampers his marriage. Things get worse for Colin after he resigns from his current position, separates from his wife, and takes up drinking again. Can Colin make a comeback to politics? What will become of his marriage and his career?

With “The Runner,” writer/director Austin Stark attempts to create a character study about redemption, politics, mistakes, corruption, but he doesn’t have much to say about these topics. Stark makes the mistake of over plotting everything which causes the film to feel entirely forced. The story goes from point A to Point B and so forth with ease which leaves little room for conflict or drama. At the end of the day, it’s just a fairly dull movie about a starry-eyed politican getting in hot water and dealing with the consequences of his self made situation.

The only real positive here is the cast which contains Nicolas Cage, Peter Fonda, Sarah Paulson, and Connie Nielsen. While no one gives a career best performance here by any means, they at least make the lackluster material watchable.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.85:1 1080p. How does it look? It’s a fine transfer. No more, no less.

Audio Track: Dolby TrueHD 5.1. How does it sound? So-so. Truth be told, it’s a bit tame.

The only extras are trailers for Alchemy titles.
