Syrup Blu-ray Review

Syrup Blu-ray

“Syrup” is an embarassing satire/love story.

Having just graduated business school, Scat (who names a character Scat?) is looking to make a name for himself in the marketing business. While at his new job, he falls for a marketing manager (Six) and creates an exciting new soda brand. Unfortunately, his not so talkative stoner roomate Sneaky Pete (I loathe typing these character names) swoops in on the soda deal leaving Scat out to dry. Luckily, Scat gets a chance at redemption when Six (played by Amber Heard) enlists him to do a major campaign for the soda named Fukk (I’m not making any of this up, folks). What will happen with Scat’s career and will he and Six develop a relationship together?

“Syrup” (which is based on Max Barry’s novel) attempts to be an amusing satire about images, fantasy, marketing, and love, but screenwriters Max Barry and Aram Rappaport stumble left and right in their attempts to be clever. Between the ridiculous character names and the amateurish dialogue to the overdone narration and the corny music, everything feels forced here. Subtlety does not seem to be in these two writers’ vocabulary as they constantly beat you over the head with themes and ideas. The dialogue and love story in particular are incredibly over the top.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.35:1 1080p. How does it look? The colors are crisp, the transfer is nice, what more could you want?

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? While not the most sound heavy track, it is decent nonetheless.

Extras:
* Magnolia trailers and a “Syrup” trailer.
* BD-Live capabiltiies.
* “AXS TV: A Look At Syrup”- The standard AXS TV featurette about the film.
* An interview with executive producer and costume designer Sophia Banks-Coloma.

Overall Thoughts: There’s a good reason you have probably never heard of “Syrup.” Skip this one.
