Elsa And Fred Blu-ray Review

Elsa And Fred Blu-ray

“Elsa and Fred” is a schmaltzy love story.

After his wife passes away, a lonely, grumpy, stubborn elderly man (Fred) is moved into a new apartment by his daughter. While in his new home, Fred initially prefers to keep to himself but that all changes when he meets his lively and nosy retired neighbor Elsa. Although their encounters don’t always go well, the two slowly begin to develop a friendship that blossoms into something more.

While it’s admirable to see a film revolving around aging movie stars, “Elsa and Fred” is not the best vehicle for Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer. Between the scenes of MacLaine listening to rap music and the repetitive sequences of the two titular characters bickering endlessly, “Elsa and Fred” is certainly lacking in the script department. Sure, the film has heart and a touching weepy ending, but the forced drama and clichéd rocky relationship moments cause the film to feel far too routine.

On the plus side, the ensemble cast is fairly strong here. Marcia Gay Harden, Scott Bakula, and James Brolin are all fine in supporting roles while stars Christopher Plummer and Shirley MacLaine do the best with the roles they were given. Even with the rather forced interactions, Plummer and MacLaine manage to have some on screen chemistry together.

Presentation: 16:9 1080p. How does it look? Satisfactory.

Audio Track: An Unspecified Dolby TrueHD track. How does it sound? While a bit on the quiet side, the track is decent enough.

The only extras include Millennium Entertainment trailers and a 19 minute making of featurette that contains behind-the-scenes footage, cast and crew interviews, and discussions about this remake.
