Are You Here Blu-ray Review

Are You Here Blu-ray

“Are You Here” is a woefully misguided movie.

After the father of his eccentric, lost and mentally unstable friend (Ben) passes away, a broke, selfish, womanizing weatherman (Steve) accompanies his pal on a trip to his childhood home to deal with family affairs. While there, Ben tries to turn his life around while Steve unexpectedly falls for Ben’s father’s young wife (Angela).

Considering “Are You Here” stars Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis, and Amy Poehler and features  the writing and directorial talents of “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner, one would think this film would at least be worth watching. Sadly, that is simply not the case.

After being panned by critics and audiences alike, it’s easy to see why there was little to no fanfare regarding the release of “Are You Here.” Not only does this tonally awkward family dramedy have no discernible demographic, but the movie seems to have no direction as well. Who was this movie intended for? What scenes were supposed to be humorous? Was the story trying to be a profound piece about finding yourself and your place in live? I’m not even sure Matthew Weiner knows the answers to these questions.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look?  A perfectly adequate hi-def transfer.

Audio Track: Dolby TrueHD 5.1. How does it sound? Since this is largely a dialogue heavy film, there isn’t much going on here. With that said, it’s still a solid track.

The only extras here are Millennium Entertainment trailers and a commentary by Matthew Weiner, Christopher Gay and Christopher Manley.
