White Christmas Blu-ray Review

White Christmas Blu-ray

“White Christmas” comes to Blu-ray with a new Diamond Anniversary Edition to celebrate the film’s 60th anniversary.

When it comes to the Christmas film genre, “White Christmas” is an undeniable classic. While the often sappy plot may not be the most exciting, the story of two WWII Army pals/song and dance performers (Bob and Phil) teaming up with love interests/sisters/musical performers (Betty and Judy) to save their former General’s inn is still sweet. As is common for a classic musical romantic dramedy, there are plenty of running gags, shenaningans, misunderstandings, and yes, lots of musical numbers to keep the viewers entertained as well.

Of course, the film’s music is partially why this film has stood the test of time. The tunes (which were all written by the legendary Irving Berlin) such as “White Christmas,” “Gee, I Wish I Was Back In The Army,” and the Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye version of “Sisters” are incredibly catchy and are bound to get stuck in your head time and time again.

Speaking of Kaye and Crosby, you simply can’t go wrong with seeing this duo on screen. Between Crosby’s irresistible singing and Kaye’s smile inducing theatrics, their talents elevate the otherwise unremarkable story. Actresses Vera Ellen and Rosemary Clooney also manage to hold their own opposite the leading men. Not only do they have great chemistry with Kaye and Crosby, but they also put on some nice show stopping moments throughout the 120 minute film.

Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? There are some noticeable dirt specs here, but the colors are so striking that it makes up for the print’s flaws.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? Truth be told, it doesn’t sound like a DTS track as it’s a bit too muted. Still, the song numbers sound particularly sharp here.

* The highlight of the bonus features is a bonus CD that includes 12 Christmas themed classic songs sung by the likes of Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland and Peggy Lee.
* 2 “White Christmas” theatrical trailers and 4 photo galleries.
* A solo commentary by Rosemary Clooney. Expect lots of pauses, but there’s still plenty of behind-the-scnes stories.
* “Classic Holiday Moments”- 5 Christmas themed musical performances by Bing Crosby, Michael Buble, Danny Kaye and Nat King Cole and a short reading of “A Christmas Carol” by Danny Kaye.
* “Assignment Children” (with an optional intro by Michael Buble). A 17 minute short film about UNICEF featuring Danny Kaye.
* “Backstage Stories From White Christmas”- Did you know Fred Astaire and Donald O’Connor were once considered for “White Christmas”? You will after this interesting behind-the-scenes featurette.
* “Bing Crosby: Christmas Crooner”- A piece on the legendary and inspirational singer/actor Bing Crosby.
* “Danny Kaye: Joy to the World”- A featurette on the do-it-all entertainer Danny Kaye.
* “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas”- A spotlight on the iconic song and its creator (Irving Berlin).
* “Rosemary’s Old Kentucky Home”- A tour of Clooney’s home (which has now become a museum).
* “White Christmas: From Page To Stage”- A look at the stage musical.
* “White Christmas: A Look Back With Rosemary Clooney”- The title says it all.
* A “White Christmas” sing-along option.
