The Mentalist Season 6 DVD Review

The Mentalist Season 6 DVD

“The Mentalist” is running on empty.

In the 22 episode penultimate season 6, the Red John mystery is finally resolved! Aside from that, viewers can expect to see stories about Rigsby and Van Pelt marrying, the CBI disbanding, a time jump, Jane and Libson entering a new line of work, Rigsby and Van Pelt’s new business, missing person cases (including one involving human traffickers kidnapping people), a cold case, and the usual routine murder case of the week involving a cartographer, an attorney, etc.

Since “The Mentalist” began, the Red John mystery has been integral to the plot and characters. Alas, as most viewers know, the storyline has been drawn out to say the least. The showrunners and writing staff seemed to have realized this and have decided to wrap up the Red John story arc over the course of the first 8 episodes of season six. However, after learning about Red John and his fate, what exactly is left for “The Mentalist”? As season 6 shows, not much. Considering the show was built upon this story arc, it’s weird to see “The Mentalist” continuing on through the rest of season 6 and eventually a final season 7. Sure, the main characters (Jane and Libson) have a new career path with the FBI and perhaps something more (I’m not going to spoil what that is), but by the time the season finale rolls around, it’s clear that the writers have run out of ideas. Again, I have to be vague here, but whenever that “something more” occurs, it’s usually the death knell for any TV series. You’ll know it when you see it.

Presentation: Widescreen. How does it look? The episodes look solid in standard definition.

Audio Track: Dolby Digital 5.1. How does it sound? I didn’t detect any issues with the 5.1 track. It does the job.

* Deleted scenes for episodes 4, 10, 12, and 13.
* “Patrick Jane: Recovered, Redeemed, Restored”- A featurette on the journey of the Patrick Jane character, the Red John arc, season 6, etc.

  1. Nicely written. I feel season 7 will be pretty useless. After Red John there seems nothing for teh otherwise such a nail biting show
