Adventure Time: The Suitor DVD Review
“Adventure Time” feels like it has run its course.
In “Adventure Time: The Suitor,” fans get 16 random episodes from seasons 2, 3, 4, and 5. In these sixteen tales, expect to see stories about: Princess Bubblegum having a troublesome suitor named Braco, a horse (James Baxter) who can change people’s sour moods, a no talking contest between Jake and Finn, an episode comprised of 5 shorts, Finn, Jake, and Princess Bubblegum venturing to Wizard City, a BMO centric tale, Marceline’s stuffed animal Hambo, a ghost, Finn turning into a Beta Hug Wolf, Finn in the Spirit World, Finn and Jake trapped in their own subconscious minds, Sir Slicer, and Finn becoming Marceline’s henchman.
If you are in need of more trippy and surreal Jake and Finn adventures, this DVD should satisfy those needs. These sixteen episodes offer up more of the same weird characters and weird humor that fans have come to expect from this cult series. Personally, I find the show’s humor to fall flat more often than not. Yes, the show is undeniably imaginative, but the series relies too heavily on being weird for the sake of being weird (James Baxter the Horse anyone?). This shtick has become tiresome and it feels like the show is running out of creative juice as of late. What happened to the initial energetic tone that early episodes had? What happened to the hoopla surrounding this show? Both seem to have waned.
On the plus side, this particular DVD does give characters other than Jake and Finn a chance to shine here. Princess Bubblegum, Marceline, and the annoying BMO all get the spotlight with their own character centric episodes.
Video/Audio:
Presentation: Widescreen. How does it look? Colorful as usual.
Audio Track: Dolby Digital 2.0. How does it sound? The track is fine but it’s still odd that this show doesn’t have a 5.1 track.
Extras include 2 ads for “Adventure Time” and a text character bio gallery for Braco, James Baxter, Mr. Fox, Cuber and King Worm.
