Doctor Who: The Web Of Fear DVD Review

Doctor Who- The Web of Fear DVD

“Doctor Who: The Web of Fear” will please longtime Whovians.

As you probably heard last year, BBC announced that episodes 2, 4, 5 and 6 of “The Web of Fear” were recovered making it a nearly complete serial adventure. On the downside, episode 3 is still nowhere to be found which is a real bummer since that particular part is the one that introduces Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart. On the plus side, fans still get a reconstruction of episode 3 with the complete audio track. At any rate, there’s no question that the discovery of any missing episodes is and always will be a celebratory event for Whovians which makes this “The Web of Fear” DVD a very special release for Whovians across the globe.

In case you aren’t familiar with the Second Doctor era story “The Web of Fear,” it’s a 6 part sequel to “The Abominable Snowmen” (which is sadly missing 5 of the 6 episodes) in which the Doctor, Jamie, and Victoria team up with Professor Travers and British Army Soldiers (including Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart) to fend off robot Yetis, a fungus, AND the Great Intelligence in the London Underground.

Despite the fact that the repetitive story barely has enough plot for 6 episodes, the atmospheric “The Web of Fear” is still an important and entertaining episode in the “Doctor Who” cannon. As I mentioned above, ‘Web’ not only introduces fan favorite Lethbridge-Stewart, but it also contains the memorable foe The Great Intelligence who would later resurface in the modern era of “Doctor Who” in “The Snowmen” as well as other episodes. More than that, however, ‘Web’ encapsulates the fun of classic era DW. Not only do you get to witness one of the best Doctors in Patrick Troughton in action, but you also get some of the most exciting action sequences (namely the sequence involving soldiers battling robot Yetis with a bazooka).

Presentation: 4:3 fullscreen. How does it look? The B&W prints are in surprisingly good shape.

Audio Track: Dolby Digital Mono. How does it sound? The Mono track is crisp and clear throughout.

The only extras are trailers for “Doctor Who” series 7, Part 1 and “Enemy of the World.”

Overall Thoughts: While flawed to be sure, “The Web of Fear” is well worth seeing. I can only hope that one day episode 3 will be found so fans can watch the complete story.
