Don Jon Blu-ray Review

Don Jon Blu-ray

“Don Jon” is an admirable film that suffers from an uneven script.

The plot: Jon is a young New Jersey man who values staying fit, family, friends, his car, his home, scoring with women, and, above all, porn. Even though he loves being with women physically, he still finds porn to be more sexually gratifying. When Jon meets his dream girl Barbara (Scarlett Johansson) at a club, it appears that he might be changing his tune. Is Jon ready for a serious relationship? Will his porn fetish hurt his relationship? Can a troubled middle aged woman  named Esther (Julianne Moore) help Jon out? Can Jon reflect on his life, learn about himself, and possibly change his outlook on life (and sex)? All of these questions will be answered.

Sundance darling “Don Jon” certainly has a lot going for it on the surface. Not only is the film a fast paced, fresh and sometimes funny character study about obsessions, sex, relationships, love, fantasy, and porn, but it’s also an impressive debut from the ultra talented Joseph-Gordon Levitt (who wrote, directed, and starred in this project). JGL displays incredible versatility here as a sleazy 20 something (it’s hard to believe this is the same actor we saw in the brilliant “50/50”) and he proves he has the chops to direct as well. Unfortunately, he still needs to work on his writing as the script suffers from repetition, underwritten characters (namely Barbara), an unfocused and floundering middle act, and an ending that does not work. At all. With all of that said, the flaws can still be forgiven here as JGL deserves credit for crafting a (mostly) unique piece of cinema. Given the fact that his varied career continues to grow and become better with age, it will certainly be interesting to see what he comes up with next.

Presentation: 2.40:1 1080p. How does it look? A crystal clear transfer.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? The track is very lively and loud which is generally fitting to Jon’s lifestyle in the film.
