Funko: Batman and Jon Snow Pop! Vinyl Figure Reviews

Pop Heroes Batman Pop Jon Snow

Holy Funko, Batman! There are new “Game of Thrones” and “Batman” toys!

After finding monumental success with their ever growing line of Pop! Vinyl figures, Funko has expanded the brand with two recent licenses. No, not “Doctor Who,” sadly (maybe sometime soon?). Instead, they’re for the brilliant HBO series “Game of Thrones” and the classic 1966 “Batman” TV series.

While everyone has their favorite “Game of Thrones” character (I’m Team Tyrion myself), there’s no question that one of the most popular characters from the book series and the HBO series is Jon Snow (who may or may not know nothing). He also happens to have one of the coolest figures. The figure comes with Snow’s trademark Night’s Watch outfit. In typical Funko fashion, it’s got a cutesy look to it and it works particularly well for this one. Fans can expect to see Snow’s scruffy hair (in plastic form), a thin mustache and beard, the black cloak with fur neck warmer, black boots, black gloves, black pants, black vest, and a big sword in his right hand. Basically, lots of black.

Of course, if you have seen photographs of various cast members from ‘Thrones’ posing with toys of their likeness, you’ll know Jon Snow isn’t the only figure available. At the time of this review, fans can pick up figures of Tyrion, Robb Stark, Arya, Jaime Lannister, Cersei, Renly, Daenerys, Ned Stark, a White Walker, The Hound, and Khal Drogo. In late February, 2014, Funko is scheduled to release Brienne, Joffrey, Hodor (!), Tywin, Ghost, a Dragon, and Ygritte vinyl figures.

After a lengthy ongoing legal rights issue, “Batman” fans wondered if they’d ever see any new merchandise based on the beloved classic 1966 TV series again. Thankfully, those worries have been put to rest now that companies like Mattel and Funko are starting to release brand new products.

As part of their successful Pop! Heroes line of vinyl figures, Funko has opted to create 4 new figures (Batman, Robin, Catwoman and The Joker) based on the televised DC Comics adaptation. Now, for those that are outraged by the lack of the Penguin or the Riddler, I’m sure those figures could still become a reality providing this line prove to be a hot seller.

Now, while I can’t comment on the details or the quality of Robin, Catwoman, and The Joker having not seen them, I can tell you all about the Batman figure. If you’re expecting a 100% likeness of Adam West in the vein of say a Hot Toys figure, the Funko products are probably not for you. The Pop! Vinyl figures have a very distinct style to them and some collectors may be put off by the cartoony look to the characters. If the style doesn’t concern you, you’re going to love this figure. Everything you know and love about the 1966 Batman is here. There’s the iconic blue/black mask, the flowing blue jagged edged cape, the grey suit with the black Batman symbol on a yellow circle, the blue outlines on the mask, the blue boots, the handy yellow utility belt, the dark blue outside underpants, and the blue spiked gloves. You can practically hear Adam West’s distinguished voice while you look at it.

If you think those are the only 1966 Batman toys Funko has released, think again. Not only are there four Wacky Wobblers (AKA bobble heads) for Batman in the Batmobile, Catwoman, Robin, Batman (stand-alone), and The Joker, but there’s also a Pop! Vinyl figure version of Batman in the classic Batmobile. Yes, it’s as cool as it sounds.

Overall Thoughts: I can say without hesitation that “Game of Thrones” and “Batman” fans should pick up these collectible toys. They’re fun, they’re affordable, and they make great gifts. What more can you ask for?
