Magic City Season 2 Blu-ray Review

Magic City Season 2 Blu-ray

The second and final season of “Magic City” is no better than the first.

In the 8 episode second season, the storylines continue from where the first season left off. Major storylines in season 2 involve: Miami hotel owner Isaac (or Ike for short) spending time in jail for a murder charge, Ike trying to get rid of Ben (the mob boss) from his life, Ben wanting to kill Ike, Ike’s son (Stevie) and Ben’s wife (Lily) forming a relationship, the introduction of Ben’s boss (Sy), a backdrop of Castro’s rise to power, Stevie working with Ben, a gambling bill, character deaths, Ike’s family complications, and attorney Jack Klein.

In my review of the first season set of “Magic City,” I stated that this 50’s gangster series had no identity of its own. It wants so badly to be the next “Boardwalk Empire,” but the show simply never found an audience or impressed TV viewers (as evidenced by the series cancellation). We can all agree that the production values and cinematography are first rate, but the show’s visuals aren’t enough to make you want to stick around to see what happens in the next episode. In an age where intense, character driven serialized TV series like “Breaking Bad” and “Game of Thrones” reign supreme, “Magic City” seems to take its own course and that’s a real mistake. First of all, the show has zero interesting characters. They all feel like “been there, done that” clichés aside from James Cann’s Sy character (who was introduced FAR too late in the series). The show’s biggest mistake, however, is that the writing staff wasted far too much time in each and every episode. The story does not move forward enough in “Magic City” and the plot takes too long to get going. The overabundance of subplots and the generally clumsy writing especially bog the show down making it hard to care about anything going on. It doesn’t help that there is no proper ending or even any closure here as the series was canceled after season two wrapped up. Really, there’s no incentive to tune into this incomplete show that wasted its potential unless you were already a fan of the first season.

Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? The stunning cinematography looks even better in 1080p.

Audio Track: Dolby TrueHD 5.1. How does it sound? It’s a strong mix. I doubt anyone will complain about it.

* Starz series trailers.
* “The Gamble For Havana”- A short extra feature that goes into details about story specifics of season 2.
* “The Criminal Element”- A featurette about the criminal characters of “Magic City.”
* “Tales From The Underbelly”- A piece about the new characters (and cameos) of season 2.
* “Magic City Style”- A featurette about the costumes.
* “The Music That Makes Magic”- A featurette about the, you guessed it, music of the show.
