Wings of Life Blu-ray Review

Wings of Life Blu-ray

“Wings of Life” is a picturesque, but dull Disneynature documentary.

After last year’s incredible documentary “Chimpanzee,” Disneynature stumbles a bit with their latest release “Wings of Life.” As soon as you learn that Meryl Streep narrates this nature docu from the point of view of a flower, you can’t help but feel like writer/director Louis Schwartzberg is trying a bit too hard here.

While the film boasts positive messages about the importance of planting and pollination, the messages are beaten over the viewers head due to the repetitive and slow paced structure of the documentary story. Sure, the imagery of the vital connection between plants/flowers and bees, butterflies, birds, bats, and humans proves to be jaw droppingly beautiful, but the film has no real emotional impact nor does it ever dig deep. It feels like a series of brief factoids played to images more than anything else. It never fully captures the viewer’s attention outside of the striking imagery.

Video/Audio:

The documentary, which is presented in 1.85:1 1080p, looks positively stunning (which should come as no surprise). From the extreme close-ups of bats and bees to the awe inspiring butterfly swarms, ‘Wings’ will dazzle you if nothing else.

The 5.1 DTS-HD MA audio track sounds sharp. Streep’s narration and the music mostly make up the film’s soundtrack as it were, but there a number of natural sounds as well.

Extras:
* DVD copy.
* Disneynature Protects and Sneak Peek of “Bears”- A short overview of other Disneynature titles and a short trailer for the 2014 documentary “Bears.”

Summary: Despite containing a meaningful message about symbiosis, “Wings of Life” comes off as too cheesy and uninvolving to fully work. Worth a rent, but I’d recommend checking out “Chimpanzee” instead if you haven’t already.
