C-Control: The Money Of Soul And Possibility- The Complete Series Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Review

C-Control- The Money Of Soul And Possibility Blu-ray-DVD

“C-Control” is a rich and intellectual economic centric anime series.

Set in the secret magical world known as the Financial District, this 11 episode anime series revolves a young, hard working, low wage making college student (Kimimaro) who is roped into becoming a part of the Financial District via the Midas Bank. In this world, deals are not transactions, but rather fights. With a helpful asset (fighting tools), Entres (Entrepreneurs) are forced to make “deals” with others in order to gain wealth and to ensure a future for themselves. A loss could prove fatal both financially and for the future.

Viewers can expect to see stories about: The Financial District big wig Mikuni, deals/battles, Kimimaro’s parents, the Starling Guild, Kimimaro learning about the Financial District and its rules, correlations between the real world and the Financial District, Mikuni’s past, Jennifer (a Financial District investigator who becomes an Entre), and an eventual deal between Kimimaro and Mikuni, the future, and other Entres.

An anime about economics may not sound like the most thrilling thing on paper, but to my surprise, this unique and relevant series proved to be well worth watching. While the “Soul Eater” and RPG esque action may be entertaining eye candy, it’s the themes and ideas that are explored that caught my attention. The series cleverly delves into ideas of capitalism, greed, societal structures, jobs, class systems, economic woes, and decisions/events impacting the future. Simply put, there’s a lot more going on here than the average anime and for that I am thankful.

The characters are equally engaging here (especially Mikuni and Kimimaro). Between Mikuni and Kimimaro’s past, their lifestyles and viewpoints on life, and their interactions with other characters (such as their respective assets), they never come off as boring or trite.

Video/Audio:

Presented in widescreen 1080p, this visually interesting anime series looks mighty impressive in hi-def. The uber bright images of the Financial District city look particularly grand on Blu-ray.

This set contains English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0 audio tracks. For a change, both tracks work well. While the 5.1 has more audio depth, the voice tracks are about on par with one another. You can’t go wrong with either one.

Extras:
* Trailers for “Steins;Gate,” “Eden of the East,” “Spice and Wolf,” “Black Lagoon,” “Mass Effect,” “Fafner,” “Soul Eater,” “Deadman Wonderland,” “Serial Experiments Lain,” and Funimation.com
* Commentary on episode 5 by J. Michael Tatum and the excessively loud Monica Rial. The two chat about scripts, voice acting, characters, etc.
* Promo videos, an original trailer, original commercials and a U.S. trailer for “C-Control.”
* Textless opening and closing songs.
* “C-Conomics 101”- Text terminologies for the series.
* Commentary on episode 11 by Todd Haberkorn and Brina Palencia. More of the same.

Summary: Give “C-Control” a chance. You might be surprised by what you see.
