Heaven’s Lost Property Season 1 Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Review

“Heaven’s Lost Property” is an obnoxious anime series.

Based on the manga of the same name, “Heaven’s Lost Property” focuses on a loner kid named Tomoki who just wants peace and quiet (as he states ad nauseaum). Unfortunately for him, peace and quiet isn’t an option when a black hole appears and drops out an Angeloid named Ikaros whose purpose is to fulfill every wish and desire. As you can imagine, Tomoki starts off by making dumb, selfish, careless, thoughtless wishes that get him into trouble. Aside from silly wishes involving people disappearing and panties, the other plots and story arcs involve Tomoki’s friend and neighbor Sohara, the eccentric braniac Sugara, a strange student named Mikako, another Angeloid named Nymph, a camping trip, a deserted island beach trip, a shooting contest, a fair trip, a battle of the bands contest, a bathouse visit, a three way date, Angeloid interceptors (AKA Harpies), the dark side of Ikaros, and the Angeloids enrolling as students as Tomoki’s school.

“Heaven’s Lost Property” is the lowest common denominator anime series. It’s shameless in its perverted panty and breast filled fan service and the humor (mostly involving karate chops and exaggerated emotions) is not funny in the least. Add in clichéd anime episode plots (ala the beach and camping trips) and a lousy animation style and it all adds up to a rather groan worthy viewing experience. It’s a shame too because had the anime series had a different style and tone, the plot about the Angeloids might have worked. ‘Property’ is at its best when it has a more serious and darker tone, but unfortunately those scenes are few and far between.

Summary: You know a series doesn’t work when even a season ending cliffhanger ending doesn’t compel you to want to watch a second season. Skip it.

Video/Audio:

I may not care for this anime series, but I have to say the show looks stunning in 1080p. The colors are so bright and vivid here that I can’t imagine watching it on DVD.

This set contains English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0 audio tracks. The English dub is so-so primarily due to the irritating dubbing for the character of Tomoki. The Japanese track is much better voice acting wise, but alas, it lacks the 5.1 depth of the English track.

Extras:
* Trailers for “Rosario + Vampire,” “Yamada’s First Time,” “Sekirei,” “Dance In The Vampire Bund,” “Strike Witches,” “Ikki Tousen,” “My Bride Is A Mermaid,” “Fairy Tail,” “Phantom- Requiem For The Phantom,” “Sengoku Basara,” and Funimation.com.
* 1 textless song and a whopping 13 textless closing songs.

  1. Personally I love SnO ( or HlP if you perfer) but everyone’s entitled to there own opinion, differing ideals makes the world go round, bladdy bladdy bla. But there was something I would like to clarify.

” You know a series doesn’t work when even a season ending cliffhanger ending doesn’t compel you to want to watch a second season. Skip it.”

SnO ends with a fade to black kind of ending, there’s no cliffhanger.

  2. I was talking about the end of the OVA which is basically episode 14.

    • The part where the new angelroid appears? Episode 14 came out about 4 months before the second season aired. That was a trailer for the second season Funi just stuck on there. I don’t think it’s fair to criticize SnO for something Funi did.

      • I did not know this. The point is I have no interest in season 2 after seeing season 1. The ending is irrelevant really. I appreciate your comments though.
