The Life And Times Of Tim Season 2 DVD Review

“The Life And Times Of Tim” is one of the funniest shows on television.

In theis 10 episode second season, Tim struggles to move on past his break-up with Amy, gets in trouble at his job, takes up writing, and is saved by a female firefighter. Other stories involve Tim out on a work retreat, a trip to Atlantic City with Rodney and Stu, a camping trip with boy scouts, and Tim trying to help a Priest. Additionally, there are several non Tim centric stories involving Tim’s Boss, Amy buying a gun, Rodney having troubles with his wife, Stu falling for an elephant protestor, Stu discovering a talent for ping pong, and, of course, Debbie the prostitute. Note: Each episode contains two stories.

After an uproarious season 1, season 2 comes out of the gate strong with a gut busting season premiere that includes my personal favorite episode this season, “Tim’s Beard”.  In this episode, we find that Tim has essentially let himself go after his break-up with Amy and that he looks worse than an actual homeless man. Other highlights throughout the season include Stu’s bizarre night terrors, Tim being licked by a woman, the Boss’s goofy scat singing, more appearances by the always amusing Debbie character, and some amusing voice acting cameos by the likes of Aziz Ansari, Philip Baker Hall, and Elliot Gould.

While there has been some criticism that ‘Tim’doesn’t have a wide variety of plots, I beg to differ with season two. There’s an overall character arc to this season that finds Tim trying to get his life back on track after his break-up with Amy. Of course, everything Tim says and does winds up getting him into further trouble, but that’s what makes the show so amusing. Even when Tim’s intentions and plans are good, they never go right. You just never know what awkward (yet hilarious) adventures Tim will have and that’s what keeps viewers tuning in.

Summary: Simply put, “The Life And Times Of Tim” is one of the funniest shows you probably aren’t watching. It’s a crying shame that this show hasn’t found a bigger audience yet because it deserves to be a huge hit. Be sure to check out the third season which premieres on HBO December 16th.

Video/Audio:

The pedestrian animation and character models aren’t exactly eye candy, but it doesn’t matter. The content is what matters with this show. With that said, the show looks as good as it possibly can with this DVD release.

The Dolby Digital 5.1 is perfectly satisfactory. The voice work and music sounded clear to this reviewer.

The only extras are an HBO ad and “The Making Of The Life And Times Of Tim” which features interviews with Steve Dildarian, Nick Kroll, Matt Johnson, Edie McClurg, etc. as well as discuissions chats about the show, character development, voice acting, and animation. Footage of the audio recordings is also included.
