Love Begins DVD Review

“Love Begins” is strictly for fans of author Janette Oke’s stories.

The plot: Ellen and her sister Carrie are taking care of their farm, but they are in dire need of help. Enter Clark, a good hearted man who is assigned to work on Ellen’s farm to work off his jail debt. As you can probably guess, the single Ellen and the single Clark wind up hitting it off. Will the two fall in love and live happily ever after?

If you’ve ever read a Janette Oke novel or seen a film based on one of her stories, you probably know that there is a very basic formula to her tales. They’re all weepy faith based romance tales set in the old west and they are all indistinguishable from one another. Granted, they are part of the same series, but it would take a real Oke fan to differentiate one movie/book from the other.

One can argue that the material may have strong morals and themes, but personally, that’s not enough. It may be comfort material for some readers and viewers, but I find the romantic stories to be sappy and watered down. “Love Begins” in particular takes no risks and there’s barely any conflict. It’s just a downright safe movie which is fine, but it’s not very rewarding for folks who want something a bit more original or challenging.

The 1.78:1 widescreen picture quality is somewhat bland. The colors and cinematography aren’t as sharp as they should be. The colors even look a bit muted in certain scenes.

The Dolby Digital 5.1 is adequate. This is a fairly quiet movie in terms of the score and dialogue. There are a few sound heavy scenes, but not much.

The only extra are ads for Digital Copy, “Water For Elephants,” and “Snow Flower And The Secret Fan”.
