DVDCORNER’S 2011 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE
With holiday shopping season in full swing, I thought I would help out consumers by offering up some helpful Blu-ray and DVD purchase recommendations. So, without further adieu, here is the DVDCORNER 2011 Holiday Gift Guide which also doubles as a “Best DVDs and Blu-rays of 2011” list.
Blu-rays for all ages
Star Wars: The Complete Saga Blu-ray
Let’s face it; this is the single best Blu-ray release of the year. Not only do the six films look and sound better than they ever have, but the box set is loaded with fantastic never before deleted scenes and an abundance of featurettes and documentaries. The force is definitely with this Blu-ray set.
Tron: Legacy Blu-ray
Dazzling neon color universe, light cycles, an award worthy Daft Punk score, Jeff Bridges (times two), and Olivia Wilde. ‘Nuff said.
X-Men: First Class Blu-ray
The best film of 2011 (so far) deserves to be in everyone’s collection. Buy one copy for everyone on your list.
Lego Star Wars: The Padawan Menace Blu-ray/DVD Combo
While primarily aimed at children, this half-hour Lego special is for “Star Wars” fans of all ages thanks to the witty jokes, visual gags, and clever “Star Wars” universe gags. Note: This title is only available at Walmart and Walmart.com.
TV On DVD
Doctor Who: The Movie
For years it looked like the lone 8th Doctor episode would never be released in the U.S. due to rights issues. Thankfully, the rights were cleared up last year and the 90 minute feature film finally got an extra feature filled DVD release back in Feb. of 2011. For Whovians, there is no finer gift this year.
Hey Dude Season 1
For the nostalgic folks who grew up on late 80’s and early 90’s Nickelodeon shows, it doesn’t get any better than visiting the Bar None Ranch for 13 episodes.
MST3K Vs. Gamera Volume XXI
Simply put, this is the best TV Show on DVD release of 2011. For a measly $40.99 on Amazon, you get all 5 fun-filled Gamera episodes from “Mystery Science Theater 3000” packaged in a nifty tin case that also contains 5 mini posters. A bargain if there ever was one.
Comedy
RiffTrax Live!: Reefer Madness DVD or Blu-ray
This title is far and away the funniest Blu-ray/DVD release of 2011. Not only do you get a hilarious riffing of the dopey cult classic “Reefer Madness” by comedic legends Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy, but you also get to witness one of the most truly bizarre short films (At Your Fingertips: Grasses) riffed on by the RiffTrax gang as well.
Birdemic: Shock And Terror DVD or Blu-ray
The ultimate gift for the bad movie lover on your list.
Anime
Dragon Ball Z Kai Part 5 Blu-ray or DVD
The fifth volume has the best batch of “Dragon Ball Z” episodes period. A must buy for fans of action anime series.
Shin Chan Season 3 Part 1 DVD
If you are trying to find a hilarious and raunchy anime series, you needn’t look any further than “Shin Chan”.
Sports
UFC Ultimate Fight Collection 2011 DVD Set
If you know any MMA and UFC fans who have not been naughty this year, you might want to pick up this massive 20 disc UFC Ultimate Fight Collection 2011 set for him or her. In these discs, you get UFC 116 through UFC 131, UFC Fight Night 22-24, UFC Live 2-4, and a bonus disc of extras. Note: This set is currently available to purchase at Best Buy and bestbuy.com. It will be released to other stores and online retailers December 6.
Baseball’s Greatest Games DVD Set
If you know a hardcore baseball fan who has the offseason blues, this 11 disc set makes the perfect gift (especially for supporters of New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Pittsburgh Pirates).
CD
This is a bit of shameless self promotion, but I would also recommend the “Vincent Price Presents Volume 1” radio drama CD set. If you know someone who digs Vincent Price and or radio dramas, this is the gift for them.
