Half Pint Brawlers Season 1 DVD Review

“Half Pint Brawlers” is a trashy TV show.

In the 6 episode first season of “Half Pint Brawlers,” viewers are introduced to the self proclaimed hardcore “midget wrestlers” Puppet, Kato, Mad Mex, Bobby, Turtle and sometimes Teo. The show is essentially a behind-the-scenes reality program that follows the wrestlers on the road, doing stunts (like a motorcycle jump over alligators), and performing at everywhere from Kansas City to a maximum security prison.

Before reviewing this disc, I had heard that “Half Pint Brawlers” was rather controversial and degrading to little people. After seeing it, I agree that it certainly can be at times. Instead of coming off as a cross between the laid back and entertaining “Jackass” or the scripted goofy WWE, “Half Pint Brawlers” feels like a trashy TV show in which the wrestlers will do anything to get attention and or fame. Whether they’re using staplers on each other in the ring, getting in fights on the basketball court, or hazing the rookie Turtle by putting a shock collar on him and shaving him by force, it all feels a little mean spirited at times.

I suppose the real question here is whether or not the wrestlers are indeed enjoying themselves and having the time of their lives. If they are enjoying themselves, good for them. However, if this is all a mere publicity stunt, it’s a little sad and desparate. Regardless, while this show is not something I would watch, I’m sure there is an audience out there who will get a kick out of Puppet and his fellow wrestler’s antics.

Video/Audio:

The 1.78:1 widescreen picture quality is often grainy. It’s best not to expect high quality imagery here.

The Dolby Digital Stereo audio track is a little flat, but it does the job.

No extras have been included.
