Dumbo Blu-ray Review

“Dumbo” is a charming animated Disney classic.

By now, I think everyone knows the story of the big-eared flying elephant “Dumbo” as it has become a timeless animated Disney classic. It’s not hard to see why either since it’s a very touching, simple, short film with strong themes about love, discrimination, and being unique. While the film may be somewhat uneventful and contain some strange drawn out sequences (such as the strange pink elephants sequence), it really doesn’t matter because it’s very much a character piece. The heart of the story is about the relationships between Dumbo and his mother and Dumbo and his best friend (Timothy the mouse). These relationships are what tug at the heart strings of the audience. It’s what makes the film so memorable.

Characters aside, the movie also boasts a rather catchy soundtrack. Watching the film now, I was amazed at how many song lyrics I remembered since childhood. I think it’s a testament as to how fantastic songs like “Casey Junior” and “When I See An Elephant Fly” are.

Summary: “Dumbo” is great entertainment for the whole family.

The 1.33:1 fullscreen 1080p picture quality is astonishing. It’s completely evident that Disney puts a lot of hard work into their hi-def transfers of animated classics because “Dumbo” looks better than it ever has. A pristine print.

The 7.1 DTS-HD audio track is flawless. It’s hard to believe this movie is 70 years old because the music and dialogue sound brand new.
