Thundercats Season 1 Part 1 DVD Review

“Thundercats Season 1 Part 1” will appeal to fans of the animated series and toy line.

The story: After the planet Thundera is destroyed, the Thundercats (namely Lion-O, Snarf, Wilykit, Wilykat, Cheetara, Tygra, Jaga, and Panthro) are forced to find a new home. After engaging in an unexpected battle with former Thundera enemies “The Mutants,” the Thundercats are forced to land on the nearest inhabitable planet (Third Earth). Upon arrival, the new ruler of the Thundercats (Lion-O) and company try to build a new home. Unfortunately for them, they are unable to live in peace as they encounter The Mutants, Viking berserkers, Ro-Bear Berbils (I’m not making these up), Brute Men, Giantorrs, Trolligs, planet natives, escaped convicts, Bulkans, the ghost of Grune, a deadly princess, a trap filled tower, and of course, the villainous Mumm-Ra who desires power (namely the Eye Of Thundera/Sword Of Omens that Lion-O possesses).

Despite “Thundercats” being a clear cash-in on the success of “Star Wars” and “He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe,” “Thundercats” is actually a very entertaining action animated series that is arguably even better than “He-Man.” To me, “He-Man” always felt more like a cheap commercial for action figures whereas “Thundercats” had a clear focus on characters and mythology. Granted, the series has its flaws (specifically Snarf, the corny speeches, and goofy villains), but it’s hard not get swept up in the fantasy/sci-fi world these characters inhabit. Plus, who doesn’t love Lion-O shouting “Thundercats, Ho!”?

Note: It should be noted that this DVD set is essentially a repackaged and repriced set designed to be a tie-in for the new upcoming “Thundercats” animated series. Aside from the trailers, everything here is exactly the same as the previous season 1 part 1 DVD release. If you don’t own the previous release, however, this is the set for you.

Don’t expect any restoration work on this fullscreen picture quality. The show looks as it did when it aired on television.

The Dolby Digital Mono audio track is as flat as a pancake. Nothing more needs to be said.

* Trailers for the new “Thundercats” series, “Young Justice,” “Scooby-Doo! Mystery inc.,” and “Scooby-Doo: Legend Of The Phantosaur”
* “Feel The Magic, Hear The Roar: Thundercats Fans Speak Out”- Wil Wheaton and others chat about their love of the series.
