The Roommate DVD Review

Leighton Meester carries “The Roommate.”

“The Roommate” begins with the fashionable, cheery Sarah arriving at the University of Los Angeles. She goes to her dorm room where she later meets her shy, artist roommate (Rebecca). At first the two get along quite well, but little by little Sarah discovers that Rebecca is rather unstable. Basically, the movie strongly resembles “Single White Female” and other 90’s thrillers.

Despite being an unoriginal, watered down PG-13 thriller that lives and breathes cliches, “The Roommate” still manages to be entirely watchable mostly due in part to a scene-stealing performance by Leighton Meester. Granted, Minka Kelly and Cam Gigandet (who seems to be everywhere these days) are fine in their roles, but Meester gives a genuinely creepy and memorable performance. Whether her character is plucking out someone’s belly ring, getting a matching tattoo, (literally) beating herself up, or engaging in an epic catfight (of sorts), Meester clearly prevents the film from ever becoming an uninteresting bore.

The 2.40:1 widescreen picture quality is fine for a DVD. It should be noted that this film is also available on Blu-ray.

I didn’t notice any problems with the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track. It does its job.

* Trailers for “Insidious,” “Just Go With It,” “Country Strong,” “Beastly,” and “You Got Served: Beat The World.”
* 7 deleted/alternate scenes
* Commentary by Christian E. Christiansen. Normally I’m not a fan of solo audio commentaries, but this is actually an entertaining commentary with Christiansen talking about his experience in making his first American movie.
