Moonstruck Blu-ray Review

“Moonstruck” may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

For those that don’t know, “Moonstruck” is a romantic comedy about an Italian-American woman named Loretta who is engaged to be married to a man named Johnny, but winds up falling for Johnny’s brother Ronny instead. There are also subplots about Loetta’s parents and their “romances” as well.

While “Moonstruck” is a pleasant enough light hearted comedy, I never quite understood the fascination with it nor can I understand why it was showered with rave reviews and awards. Outside of a great scene stealing performance by Nicolas Cage, the film isn’t particularly funny. I know many folks think it’s hilarious, quirky and charming, but to me, the constant talking, arguing, worrying, and whining tends to get on my nerves after awhile because there’s only so much of these characters I can take.

Summary: “Moonstruck” is the type of Hollywood fluff that will appeal to moviegoers who love romantic comedies (or Cher).

Video/Audio:

The 1.85:1 1080p pictue quality is decent, but it’s nothing to ride home about. To be honest, I didn’t feel this disc was quite up to Blu-ray standards. It looked more like an upconverted DVD.

The 5.1 DTS-HD audio track is adequate. I didn’t notice any issues when it came to the dialogue or music.

Extras:
* “Moonstruck” theatrical trailer.
* “Moonstruck: At The Heart Of An Italian Family”- A documentary that covers Italian-American couples, romance, the script, the cast, family, etc.
* “Pastas To Pastries: The Art Of Fine Italian Food”- A 6 part extra that covers various Italian eateries in NY.
* Commentary by Cher, Norman Jewison and John Patrick Shanley. Not the most exciting commentary, but there’s some interesting stories about the film.
* “Music Of Moonstruck”- A featurette about the music and score.
