The Guilty DVD Review

While far fetched, “The Guilty” is a suspenseful thriller filled with twists and turns.

“The Guilty” is a mini- series that has two main interconnected storylines. The first story revolves around a hot shot slimeball defense attorney (Steven) who appears to have everything going for him (including a possible promotion) until he gets drunk and rapes his secretary (Nicky). The story then switches to a thief (Eddy) who is fresh out of prison whose life is in the dumps as he hangs around his criminal friends and does not get along with his parents. Eddy finds a new calling, however, when he discovers that he was adopted. Eddy sets out to find his father, but winds up crashing into Tanya and her roommate Nicky. As you can guess, the two stories intertwine from this point on, but I won’t go into any more details than that as it would spoil the plot twists.

At first, I wasn’t quite sure if “The Guilty” would work. It was clear the series was undoubtedly dated and that the script was filled with some clumsy dialogue and a few incredibly far fetched coincidental plot devices. Still, as the story progessed, I found myself becoming drawn into the story and I was curious to see how it would end. As it turns out, it was worth watching. It’s rare to find a series (or film) to be rather unpredictable as virtually everything is so formulaic and by-the-numbers these days.

I should note that this series isn’t for everyone. It’s dark, violent, and some folks might take issue with the fact that this series has a despicable lead character. Personally, I found it refreshing because it took that route. Not every story has to have a likeable main character or a hero.

Summary: “The Guilty” is worth a rent.

The fullscreen picture is actually quite terrible. The image is very fuzzy and covered with dirt specs. The Dolby Digital Stereo track isn’t much better. While the dialogue is audible, it is very flat.

Extras include 5 cast filmographies, a trailer montage for Acorn Media titles and trailers for “Trial And Retribution” and “Foyle’s War,”
