Bones Season 5 Blu-ray Review
There’s nothing special about the formulaic “Bones.”
For those unfamiliar with “Bones,” it is a forensic and police procedural show that mainly revolves around Special Agent Booth and forensic anthropologist “Bones” Brennan who works at the Jeffersonian Institute. Together, the two frequently team up to investigate crimes. In the 22 episode fifth season, they investigate death/corpse cases in an Amish community, a block party, a Civil War Battleground, a Rock N’ Roll Fantasy Camp, an Aquarium, etc. Major subplots involve Booth and Brennan going on dates, Brennan’s book, Booth falling for Brennan, Booth and Brennan’s family, Booth and Brennan’s psychologist (Sweets) and the Jeffersonian Lab crew (namely Angela and Jack Hodgins).
If there’s one thing I’ve grown to dislike about TV, it’s the abundance of procedural shows because they rarely offer anything new. With “Bones,” the show is famous for having one element that makes it stand out from the rest of the shows in its genre- the chemistry between the lead characters Booth and Brennan (played by David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel). Personally, I can’t say I find their relationship very interesting. It should be noted that I was a fan of Boreanaz’s work in the past (especially “Angel”), but I feel like he’s slumming it here. He deserves better. As for Emily Deschanel, I find her to be rather annoying. She’s certainly not as appealing or as charming as her sister Zooey Deschanel (who actually guest stars in the episode “The Goop On The Girl”).
On the subject of cameos, that’s easily the best thing about this season set. Viewers should keep an eye out for cameos by Robert Englund, the above mentioned Zooey Deschanel, and yes, Cyndi Lauper. Ryan O’Neal also returns as Brennan’s father.
Summary: If you’re a fan of procedurals or “Bones,” you should pick up this set. If you’re not, don’t bother.
The 1.78:1 1080p picture quality is quite good for a TV show. The colors are noticeably sharp. As for the 5.1 DTS-HD audio track, it’s satisfactory but far from excellent.
Extras:
* Extended versions of the episodes “The Tough Man In The Tender Chicken” and “The X In The Files.”
* A featurette on the 100th episode of the series.
* Commentaries on the episodes “Proof In The Pudding” and “The Beginning In The End.”
* 3 deleted scenes.
* An amusing gag reel.
* “The Nunchuck Way”- A featurette about how two cast members learned to use the weapons.
* “The Bodies Of Bones”- A featurette about the corpses are created for the series.
