The Great Kat-Beethoven’s Guitar Shred

The Great Kat is a classically trained musician who combines heavy metal guitar with Classical music on this very short dvd.  Dressed in black leather and fishnet stockings, Kat does her versions of “Flight Of The Bumblebee”, “Beethovan’s Fifth”, “Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto # 3″ Paganini’s Caprice #24”, plus three originals, “Torture Techniques”, “Blood”, and “Islamosfascists”.

While Kat has the ability to have 15 year old boy teens cream in their jeans with her outfits and her ridiculously fast licks, the songs are almost all under two minutes in length and because her playing is so fast, you tire of watching it quickly.  Its the same schtick in every video.  Most of the songs begin to sound the same because of the speed. The videos are all based for shock value and Kat delivers here with tons of fake blood and acts of violence in them (Islamofascists, Blood, Torture Techniques) to accompany her guitar and violin antics.

Extras on the disc include a short cartoon, a great fast action short of “shred geniuses” throughout history, and Metal Fugue: Bach’s The Art Of The Fugue.

This dvd is made for guitar enthusiasts who believe speed is everything.  They will love this dvd but I was left with the impression of one-dimensional music with tasteless, short videos and interpretations of classical numbers best left for speed freaks only; not very musical or creative in sound.  People looking for classical rock, such as Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Dream Theater, or ELO most certainly should pass this one up.

I guess I’m just an old fogey.
