City Of The Living Dead- Special Edition DVD Review

“City Of The Living Dead” is visually interesting, but the lack of plot and developed characters hurts the film.

The plot: After a priest hangs himself in a graveyard, the seven gates of hell are opened which causes the dead to return to life. Now, a reporter, a psychiatrist, and a psychic must fight their way through zombies to close the gates.

It should be said that Lucio Fulci’s Italian horror flick “City Of The Living Dead” is a very simplistic movie that makes very little sense. The story is almost non-existent and the characters are all one-dimensional. With that said, it’s worth watching for one reason- the memorable imagery. Viewers can expect to see bleeding eyes, a character vomiting out her guts, scalps being torn, a hanged priest popping up randomly, a skull being drilled, maggots, a woman nearly being buried alive, etc. It’s all violent, grotesque stuff, but horror junkies will surely get a kick out of it.

Summary: “City Of The Living Dead” is the definition of a film with style over substance.

‘City’ has been remastered in hi-def and it looks stunning. The colors are so much sharper than past prints. Everything from the gushing blood to the pores on the character’s skin looks crystal clear.

This DVD disc contains three stand-out audio tracks- a 6.1 DTS-ES track, a 5.1 Dolby Digital EX  track, and the Original Mono. Yes, the dubbing may be weak, but the audio quality itself is great (especially the music by Fabio Frizzi)

* English and Italian trailers.
* Radio spots and still gallery.
* “The Making Of City Of The Living Dead” features cast/crew interviews, discussions about the cast, the cinematography, zombies and horror, the locations that where shot at, etc.
