UFC Best Of 2009 DVD Review

“UFC Best Of 2009” is a solid collection of fights.

The “UFC Best Of 2009” 2-disc set includes the following matches: Matt Hughes Vs. Matt Serra, Carlos Condit Vs. Jake Ellenberger, Nate Marquardt Vs. Demian Maia, Rich Franklin Vs. Vitor Belfort, Nate Quarry Vs. Tim Credeur, Anderson Silva Vs. Forrest Griffin, Rashad Evans Vs. Lyoto Machida, Chuck Liddell Vs. Mauricio Rua, Keith Jardine Vs. Thiago Silva, Diego Sanchez Vs. Clay Guida, Randy Couture Vs. Antonio Minotauro Nogueira, and Brock Lesnar Vs. Frank Mir. Also included are a couple features on fighters like Georges St-Pierre, features on The Ultimate Fighter: United States Vs. United Kingdom and Heavyweights and Lightweight, Welterweight and Heavyweight Contender spotlights.

Even though the fighter features and spotlight are yawn worthy filler, there are still plenty of dazzling fights to be seen on this set. The Marquardt/Maia battle is short, but sweet, the Silva/Forrest battle proves why Silva is one of the best (if not the best) UFC fighter around, and the Nogueira/Couture match is an intense, hard fought match that showcases these two fighter’s talents. However, the very best match on this set has to be the Quarry/Credeur fight. Seriously folks, this is UFC at its best. The punching battle alone of this duel alone is worth the price of this DVD set.

Summary: If you want to get acquainted with UFC, “Best Of 2009” isn’t the best starting place. “The Ultimate 100 Greatest Fights” set is clearly the best introductory set on the market. However, fans of the UFC looking for a solid collection of fights can do no harm in checking out this set (assuming you don’t already own the individual UFC sets that were released last year).

All of the UFC fights here are presented in widescreen. As with all newer fights, they simply look good. It’s amazing how much the quality of sporting events has improved over the years.

The Stereo track contains clear crowd noise commentary by the announcers which is all you really need.

Extras include UFC website and DVD/Blu-ray ads, a 20 minute Behind The Scenes featurette containing interviews and discussions about fighters, and 8 bonus fights which include Georges St-Pierre Vs. BJ Penn, Mike Swick Vs. Dan Hardy, Stephan Bonnar Vs. Jon Jones, Tyson Griffin Vs. Hermes Franca, Nate Diaz Vs. Melvin Guillard, Sean Sherk Vs. Frank Edgar, Nate Diaz Vs. Joe Stevenson, and BJ Penn Vs. Kenny Florian. While all of the fights are worth a watch, the GSP Vs. BJ Penn fight is definitely the most entertaining of the bunch. The Griffin/Franca battle is also quite intense (especially the ending).
