“Extract” is Mike Judge’s weakest work to date.

When I heard that writer/director Mike Judge was making a new workplace comedy filled with social commentary, I was naturally interested. After all, he made the cult classic “Office Space.” Sadly, “Extract” turns out to be an unfunny comedy about a factory owner who is trying to work on his troubled marriage while also dealing with an accident at work that resulted in a lawsuit and a mysterious, sexy new employee who isn’t what she seems.
Ever since “Beavis And Butthead” debuted on MTV back in the 90’s, I’ve been a fan of Judge’s work. “Extract,” however, is his weakest effort to date. Sure, the cast does a fine job (especially Jason Bateman, Mila Kunis, Ben Affleck, and J.K. Simmons), but seeing the main character’s life fall apart one piece at a time isn’t funny in these circumstances (even if it is meant to be). It doesn’t help that there are many annoying and repetitive jokes/scenes (like the nosy neighbor) that get old rather quickly.
Summary: “Extract” has its moments, but it fails to work as a whole. Hopefully, in his next outing, Judge will come up with something fresh.
The 1.78:1 1080p picture quality is definitely the best, but the colors are clear enough.
The DTS-HD 5.1 track is about what you’d expect for a comedic Blu-ray release. The dialogue sounds clean but there’s not much else going on sound wise.
Extras include trailers, a deleted scene, 5 extended scenes, and a featurette (which includes interviews with the cast and crew) titled “Mike Judge’s Secret Recipe.”
