The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3 Blu-Ray

The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3

The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3

The remake of “The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3” has the familiar Tony Scott formula of action.

Scott, known for his action films, is also a favorite vehicle for star Denzel Washington, who plays a demoted dispatcher just trying to get by in the system until baddie John Travolta hijacks a subway car on his route and holds the passengers hostage, along with three other disguntled transit workers.  Travolta lavishes in his role as the manic leader of the gang, who doesn’t blink an eye in illing if his damands are not met.  Its up to Denzel to keep the situation calm whle Mayor James Gandolfini and hostage negotiator John Turturro try to save the passengers.

It’s an updated work of a mid 70’s crime film that starred Robert Shaw and Walter Matthau.  While the direction is typical Tony Scott, that is not necessarily bad.  He gets good performances from his stars and the action moves along with little slowdown.

For those looking for a good modern action flick, this is the ticket with predicatable results.

Picture and Sound

Scott’s visual canvas usually includes some grime on the lens and quick cut edits to show the frenzied pace of a scene. That is here as well but toned down a bit since a lot of the movie’s action takes place in a stationary subway car. The visuals impphasize the gritty bowels of the subway system in contrast with the clean room look of the dispatcher’s office. The HD picture is good but not outstanding, with fine detail. Sound takes full advantage of a surround system, especially during action sequences.

Extras

Extras on the disc include a lengthy “Making of, with Scott and stars interviewed, a look at the New York Subway system, commentary from Scott, and writers.
