Spread Blu-ray Review

44408813

Unless you are an Ashton Kutcher fan, “Spread” should be avoided.

GRADE:

MOVIE: D-

PICTURE: A-

AUDIO: B+

EXTRAS: C

THE MOVIE:

The plot: A womanizer/heartbreaker/man whore named Nikki spends his time sleeping his way to the top so to speak. His job is to essentially seduce and use women and live off their kindness and gratitude. The bulk of “Spread” sees Nikki becoming involved with a rich middle-aged lawyer named Samantha (played by Anne Heche) and a mysterious and secretive young waitress named Heather (Margarita Levieva). Nikki predictably uses Samantha, but he actually develops feelings for Heather. Will Nikki turn his life around or will he continue to use women?

“Spread” is far and away one of the worst films of 2009. The “risqué” story tries to be like a modern day “Shampoo,” but alas, the story turns out to be a sloppy, melodramatic, and muddled character study. To make matters worse, the main character is a thoughtless, unsympathetic loser (and scammer). Sure, he tries to redeem himself, but by that time that happens, you aren’t likely to care. It doesn’t help that the character is played by the worst working mainstream actor in Hollywood (Ashton Kutcher). I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Kutcher does not have any range. If you’ve seen one of his performances, you’ve seen them all. His entire range of emotions/reactions includes a blank stare, mumbling, and a dopey smile and laugh. That’s it. With such limited acting abilities, it’s no wonder why Kutcher has reportedly been fired from films by Steven Soderbergh and Cameron Crowe and why he’s getting limited role offers. I guess that’s why he spends most of his time nowadays doing crappy commercials or Twittering?

PICTURE AND AUDIO:

The 2.40:1 1080p picture quality gets a thumbs up from me. The Los Angeles cinematography looks impressive in 1080p.

The Dolby TrueHD 7.1 is fine. The music and dialogue sounded clear.

EXTRAS:

* Digital copy.
* “Spread” trailer and other Anchor Bay trailers.
* “Picture-In-Picture- Urban Sprawl: Los Angeles In Spread”- A pop-up feature including Interviews about the sets etc.
* “Living The Dream- The Making Of Spread”- A typical 16 minute making of that includes interviews, set footage, and discussions about the material.
* “Behind The Scenes With Ashton Kutcher” (6:00).

* “The World According To Nikki”- A 4 minute featurette about the main character.

* Commentary by Ashton Kutcher, Anne Heche and Margarita Levieva. Few things are more annoying than hearing Kutcher commentary. Avoid.
