Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths Part 2 4K UHD Steelbook Review

“Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths Part 2” stumbles.

In the second installment of the ‘Crisis On Infinite Earths’ trilogy of DC animated films, realities continue to be destroyed. Instead of upping the stakes or focusing on the universal disaster, writer James Krieg focuses on random character dynamics that don’t advance the story nearly enough. Among the plots here are Monitor saving Supergirl, Psycho Pirate (and his past), the Batman family from multiple universes interacting (and clashing) with one another, Shadow Demons wreaking havoc, John Constantine meeting Green Lantern, and so on.

After an underwhelming first part, director Jeff Wamester follows it up with an even more underwhelming second part. Part 2 very much feels like the middle act of a trilogy in that it’s clearly biding its time before the conclusion. If there was a focus on characterization or plot development this could have been a memorable sequel. Instead, viewers essentially get a whiplash from the seemingly random cuts from characters to characters. Nothing here feels remotely developed and there’s no weight to any of the drama. James Krieg just throws random character dynamics at you alongside a seemingly endless amount of battles against Shadow Demons (seriously, there’s a lot). Krieg even manages to botch the prospect of the Batman family interacting. How do you mess up an appearance by Terry McGinnis Batman of “Batman Beyond”?

Much like the first part, this would have been better suited by sticking to the classic source material by Marv Wolfman and George Perez. Yes, it goes without saying that this story would differ from the comics as it’s part of the Tomorrowverse line of DC animated films, but simply adding elements (like having characters that weren’t in the comics) doesn’t benefit the storytelling. If anything it feels like pandering.
