Heroes Of The Empire DVD Review

“Heroes Of The Empire” is a heartwarming documentary.

Directed by Tom Long, 2018’s “Heroes Of The Empire” is a documentary about the 501st UK Garrison. For those that are unaware, the 501st is a global Star Wars based organization that appears in costumes (mainly Stormtroopers) at events, conventions, and children’s hospitals. Their primary objective is to raise money for charities and fundraisers. In this particular documentary we get to know members of the UK Garrison like Gary Hailes and Rob Denehan along with prop makers (like Simon Windus), and couple Steve Weir and Karen Angel (who has made it a family bonding experience).

If you’re a passionate Star Wars fan (like myself), you’ve likely seen the 501st before at events in various attire whether it be Stormtroopers, Darth Maul, Boba Fett, Impartial Officers or what have you. They have become prominent members of so many communities and are well known for their charitable work. Yes, it’s fun to see their cosplay and detailed homemade costumes, but seeing what they do to give back is the real gift. For “Heroes Of The Empire,” Tom Long showcases a particular branch of the 501st (the UK Garrison). While the documentary is a bit dry and could have used more interviews (perhaps with Star Wars celebrities or members of other branches outside the UK), it is an effectively made documentary.

Clocking in at a mere 60 minutes, we get to see various aspects of the group from the members within the organization, places they attend (such as the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” red carpet premiere), costumes being made, and offshoots (like the Galactic Academy kids costuming group). The most emotional moments come from appearances at a children’s hospital, a funeral and the 501st presenting a gift to a child named Luke who has been struggling with health issues. It’s hard not to get choked up to see just how much of a difference the 501st can make in a child’s life.

“Heroes Of The Empire” may run a little short and could have used more material, but it’s still a well rounded documentary that sheds light on the 501st. It’s a feel good movie that features engaging behind-the-scenes footage, moving moments, and personal interviews.
