Greenland 4K UHD Review

“Greenland” is a notable disaster film.

Released on 4K to coincide with the sequel “Greenland 2: Migration,” 2020’s “Greenland” is a disaster film scripted by Chris Sparling. The story revolves around the Garrity family who reside in Atlanta. The family is comprised of John (a structural engineer), his wife Allison, and their diabetic son Nathan. John and Allison are having marital issues, but everything is about to change for the family. The Clarke comet fragments varying in size weren’t supposed to hit Earth, but when John gets a call that his family has been selected for shelter, it’s clear something bad is on the horizon. Not long after, Tampa, Florida is wiped out by a large comet fragment. The damage doesn’t stop there as the comet fragments are deemed to be a planet killer.  The Garrity family quickly moves to the Robins Air Force Base where they are set to board an evacuation flight, but all hell breaks loose. The family becomes separated, there’s civil unrest, Nathan is abducted, etc. Can the family reunite and find safety before it’s too late?

“Greenland 2: Migration” was a more action heavy entry whereas the first “Greenland” is a much more emotional and heartfelt family story. By focusing on a family amid the chaos, director Ric Roman Waugh makes it all feel very grounded and intense as the chaos around them erupts both in terms of the catastrophic comet damage and humanity struggling to survive. You definitely get to see the dark side of humanity here with Nathan’s abductors, looters, riots, and yes, even John being forced to be violent.

As much as the story is about family, humanity, and survival, it never forgets to be a disaster movie. Whether it’s happening in real time for the characters or being viewed on TV or in the distance, the Clarke comet horrors are always ever present. The fact that this movie was released during the Covid pandemic makes it even eerier still in retrospect.

The core 3 performers (Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin and Roger Dale Floyd) give genuine performances. You believe them as a family unit. Look out for small roles by veterans like Scott Glenn, Holt McCallany, David Denman, and Hope Davis as well.
