Randy And The Mob Blu-ray Review

Walton Goggins carries “Randy And The Mob.”

In 2007’s indie crime comedy “Randy And The Mob,” the story revolves around the titular small town businessman who is really lousy at business. Not only does he owe money to the IRS, but he also owes money to loan sharks connected to the mob. One such loan shark (Franco) decides to send in an enigmatic fixer (Tino) to turn things around for Randy. In the process, Tino touches the lives of everyone he meets and befriends many people including Randy’s own family (his wife, son, and his gay twin brother Cecil). Along the way, Randy learns uncomfortable truths about himself and must learn to change to repair strained dynamics with his own family.

“Randy And The Mob” starts off as a bit of a slow and clunky oddball crime comedy that is in desperate need of a tightened pacing. The moment Tino appears on screen though the movie transforms for the better. Superbly played by Walton Goggins (who is seemingly everywhere these days), Tino is a fascinating and layered character. Is he neurodivergent? Is he a sort of otherworldly figure? You’re never quite sure what the story behind this multi-talented person is which makes him all the more intriguing. What is certain is that the story greatly benefits from his presence which really overshadows everything else.

When Tino isn’t on screen, the movie is less successful. Sure, Ray McKinnon excels in dual roles and yes, Tim DeKay, Lisa Blount, Paul Ben-Victor, Brent Briscoe, and Burt Reynolds all turn in respectable performances, but Randy’s arc about accountability, family and change is overwritten and not exactly subtle.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.78:1 1080p. How does it look? Restored from original film materials, the print definitely benefits from being cleaned up but still contains a fair amount of defects and scratches.

Audio Track: LPCM 2.0. How does it sound? The audio is a little low, but adequate.

Extras:
* The big extra here is the inclusion of Ray McKinnon’s Oscar winning 2001 short film “The Accountant” (not to be confused with the Ben Affleck film). The film (which is written by, directed by and starring Ray McKinnon) also stars Walton Goggins in this story about brothers Tommy and David, David’s farm, and an eccentric and calculating accountant concocting a plan to save the farm from debt. This is a quirky little short film that features a truly standout performance by Ray McKinnon. Note: This title is also available on Blu-ray individually.
* “Randy And The Mob” theatrical trailer
* “The Making Of Randy And The Mob” which features film clips, an interview with Ray McKinnon, and set footage.
