The SpongeBob Movie: Search For SquarePants Blu-ray Review

“The SpongeBob Movie: Search For SquarePants” will appease Spongebob enthusiasts.

Scripted by Pam Brady and Matt Lieberman, “The SpongeBob Movie: Search For SquarePants” is the 4th theatrical film in the long-running franchise. The story begins with SpongeBob discovering that he has grown taller. As such, he is finally able to ride a rollercoaster at Captain Booty Beard’s Fun park. Upon arrival though, he is too scared to try it. SpongeBob becomes inspired by Mr. Krabs who has a Swashbuckler Certificate and wants to be brave like him. SpongeBob gets his chance when he comes across as a magical horn that allows him to meet the infamous ghostly pirate Flying Dutchman. The Dutchman vows to take him (and Patrick) on a journey to the Underworld full of challenges to prove his worth, but in reality, it’s all a ruse for The Flying Dutchman to break his curse and swap places with the innocent SpongeBob. Knowing he is in trouble, Mr. Krabs, Squidward and Gary venture to the Underworld to rescue SpongeBob.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 27 years since “SpongeBob SquarePants” debuted on Nickelodeon. It’s even harder to believe that it’s still going strong after all of these years. It’s a show that has now captured the hearts of generations of fans. It’s become a true pop culture icon. With the fourth theatrical film, audiences get a fun-filled pirate centric adventure that is a big step up from “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On The Run.” The CGI stop-motion style animation (with some live-action elements) is implemented again here to great effect especially in the Underworld sequences which feature everything from monsters to skeletons. In typical SpongeBob fashion, there’s plenty of humor to keep you laughing here involving everything from weird songs, crazy rollercoasters, dopey SpongeBob reactions and even a “They Live” reference. Some of the Underworld challenges get a bit tedious in the middle act, but the story’s positive messages about truth, friendship, and overcoming fears are heartfelt and give the film depth.

All of the main players are present here with Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), and Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick) once again reprising their roles. The big new addition here is Mark Hamill as The Flying Dutchman in both animated and live-action form. He steals the show as the scheming villain and elevates the story as a whole.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.85:1 1080p. How does it look? The colorful animation shines in hi-def.

Audio Track: Dolby Atmos. How does it sound? From the thumping music, cannon fire, and Spongebob laughs, this is an audio feast. Numerous other language options in Dolby Digital 5.1 such as Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, etc. are also included here.
