Evil Nun DVD Review

“Evil Nun” is as generic as its title.

Written and directed by Jose Prendes (best known for B horror movies like “Monster Mash,” “The Exorcists” and “Headless Horseman”), “Evil Nun” begins with a pregnant nun being murdered with an unseen person taking her baby. The story then jumps ahead in time to 7 people on a Catholic retreat in Mexico. Naturally, their van winds up breaking down and they try to find help. They come across a church with a suspicious Priest who warns them away. Of course, they ignore the Priest and enter the church anyway where all manner of bad things start to happen. One of the group members (Maria) becomes possessed by the dead nun from the beginning, people start dropping dead, and, you guessed it, there’s a big revelation in the end.

The tagline on the front cover of this Asylum film reads “No mercy” which honestly feels like a threat. Thankfully, “Evil Nun” isn’t horrifyingly bad or anything. It’s just painfully boring. If you’re going to make a knock off of a film like “The Nun,” it’s probably wise to have an actual Evil Nun. The nun herself really isn’t even evil and she barely appears on screen physically. Talk about false advertising.

The film’s greatest faults lie in the script. The story is devoid of character, Prendes is unable to drum up anything resembling scares, and no one on screen seems very concerned that people are dying. The big mystery in the end couldn’t be any more obvious either which makes the entire film anticlimactic to the max.

The cast is largely comprised of a lot of unknown indie film actors. The only familiar face here is character actor Noel Gugliemi (who goes by Noel G in this). He is most well known from the Fast and Furious franchise, “The Shield,” “Training Day,” and a ton of other credits. He at least has the best scenes in this otherwise bland horror flick.
