Loopy De Loop: The Complete Collection Blu-ray Review

“Loopy De Loop” is in need of more laughs.

Released from 1959 to 1965, Hanna-Barbera’s “Loopy De Loop” was comprised of 48 theatrical cartoons. The shorts centered around the titular French-Canadian wolf who sported a yellow cap and scarf. Unlike other wolves, Loopy is a good guy who has bad luck. He attempts to help zoo animals or wild animals, broker peace between enemies, and even try to show wolves there are other ways of living. His good intentions don’t get him very far as he often lands in trouble, gets injured, or is chased by everyone from a therapist to a Mr. Hyde esque monster. Other storylines involve his nephew Bon-Bon, fairy tale spoofs, love interests, watchdogs, and Loopy attempting to help fairy tale characters like Little Red Riding Hood and Snow White.

The show’s contents are spread out over two discs which are as follows:

Disc 1: 1. Wolf Hounded 2. Little Bo Bopped 3. Tale Of A Wolf 4. Life With Loopy 5. Creepy Time Pal 6. Snoopy Loopy 7. The Do-Good Wolf 8. Here Kiddie, Kiddie 9. No Biz Like Shoe Biz 10. Disc 2: 25. Slippery Slipper 26. Chicken Fracas-See 27. Rancid Ransom 28. Bunnies Abundant 29. Just A Wolf At Heart 30. Chicken Hearted wolf 31. Whatcha Watchin’ 32. A Fallible Fable 33. From a storytelling perspective, “Loopy De Loop” is one of the more intriguing lesser known Hanna-Barbera cartoons. The shorts themselves have more depth than the average disposable cartoon as it’s more of an existential piece about Loopy trying to show that a wolf can be more than their bad reputation. He tries to do good but is frequently blamed for things he never did. There’s a tinge of sadness to Loopy as his efforts go unnoticed or just flat out fail. This all really makes his character quite layered. Unfortunately, the shorts themselves are not particularly funny. The ideas presented here offer much to chew on, but the writers don’t seem to know how to provide satisfying laughs.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.37:1 1080p. How does it look? The series has been remastered from 4K scans of the original camera negatives. The result? The episodes feature brighter colors and sharper image quality all while maintaining the print grain.

Audio Track: 2.0 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? Expect nice clean 2.0 tracks.

No extras.
