All The President’s Men 4K UHD Review

“All The President’s Men” is an enduring classic.

Based on the novel of the same name by Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward and adapted for the screen by William Goldman, 1976’s “All The President’s Men” is a biographical political thriller. The story concerns The Washington Post investigative journalists Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward during 1972 and 1973 as they cover the evolving Watergate Scandal. What started as a story about 5 burglars in the Democratic National Committee headquarters turns into a much bigger story involving money trails, paper trails, cover-ups, sabotage, and corruption at the highest levels that, of course, ultimately leads to President Nixon resigning.

We all know how the story ends and yet “All The President’s Men” somehow remains an urgent and intense film even on repeat viewings. It’s a great representation of that bold 70’s cinema that didn’t play it safe, but it’s also a deeply important story. In this era of fake news and an inordinate amount of scandals, ‘All’ is a reminder of the necessity of journalistic integrity for the sake of justice, facts, and truth. It’s a depiction of true heroism.

The notion of making a film about journalists doing their job doesn’t sound thrilling on paper, but director Alan J. Pakula truly does make it cinematic. From the start, the film is filled with mystery, a perfect pace, and an engrossing series of events involving everything from Deep Throat to unseen surveillance. There’s a real race against the clock feeling to Bernstein and Woodward’s tireless effort to get the real story out there.

On the subject of Bernstein and Woodward, Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford are truly spectacular in the roles. They are polar opposite individuals, but they work well together. The supporting cast is equally excellent with Jack Warden, Martin Balsam, Hal Holbrook and Jason Robards all being key figures here.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.85:1 2160p. How does it look? The 4K print offers up a quality upgrade. It maintains the original print grain, but there are noticeable print flaws like scratches. The colors and image quality are crisper.

Audio Track: 2.0 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? This is a perfectly respectable 2.0 track that is a subtle improvement over past audio releases.
