Song Sung Blue Blu-ray Review

“Song Sung Blue” is a tonal mess.

Based on the documentary of the same name, 2025’s “Song Sung Blue” is a musical biodrama about Mike and Claire Dardina. The middle-aged married couple/duo were known for their Neil Diamond tribute Lightning And Thunder. The story chronicles their ups such as the band’s miraculous success and downs like the tragic accident that befell Claire, marital woes, and Mike’s health issues.

“Song Sung Blue” is the tale of two movies. The first half is a more lighthearted affair focusing on Mike and Claire’s blossoming romance, their respective families, Neil Diamond jokes and covers, the world of impersonators, and the quirky band’s rise to fame (ala opening for Pearl Jam). Once Claire’s accident occurs, the movie goes in an entirely different and darker direction as it delves into the erosion between Mike and Claire’s marriage and both of their mental and physical struggles (no spoilers as to what that all encompasses). The second half also feels very much like a standard biopic that dwells far too much on the punishing drama and tragedies. To say the movie is tonally all over the place is an understatement. Writer/director Craig Brewer seems to struggle to juggle it all and, to be honest, it all feels redundant knowing the documentary exists.

On a positive note, the cast makes it at least watchable. Hugh Jackman gets to sing, dance, and do dramatic work. He really loves parts where he can be a showman. Kate Hudson (who earned an Oscar nomination for this role) gives one of her best performances here. It was nice to see the actress dig deep in dealing with her character’s darker journey. There are plenty of notable supporting performances here from Michael Imperioli, Ella Anderson, Fisher Stevens, King Princess (who is also a real-life musician), and Jim Belushi.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.85:1 1080p. How does it look? ‘Song’ gets a sharp hi-def transfer.

Audio Track: Dolby TrueHD 7.1. How does it sound? Given that this is a music oriented film, the 7.1 track is naturally very active and hits all the right notes.

Extras:
* Digital copy
* Commentary by writer/director Craig Brewer
* Extended performances of “Crunchy Granola Suite” and “Sweet Caroline.”
* “One Plus One Equals Three”- A general featurette about the chemistry by Jackman and Hudson, the characters they play, the romantic story and more.
* “Lightning In A Bottle” is about how the film came together, the documentary the film is based on, the casting, and more.
* “Eye For Style” revolves around the costumes, makeup, and hair.
