Bugonia 4K UHD Review

“Bugonia” is another winner from Yorgos Lanthimos.
“Bugonia” is a remake of the 2003 South Korean film “Save The Green Planet.” Will Tracy pens the script of this adaptation and creates a very timely sci-fi story out of the material. The plot revolves around a beekeeper/conspiracy theorist (Teddy) and his autistic cousin (Don) who kidnap Michelle, the CEO of Auxolith (a big pharma company). The reason? Teddy believes she is an Andromedan alien who is plotting against humankind and wiping out bees. Michelle is also responsible for putting Teddy’s mother into an unresponsive state with medication that also causes her to float (it’s as weird as it sounds). Is Teddy off of his rocker and merely seeking revenge against Michelle or is most of what he is saying actually true?
Director Yorgos Lanthimos has made a career out of creating unique oddball stories like “Poor Things” and “Dogtooth.” This time he remakes a film but puts his own spin on it. As mentioned above, despite being an “out there” sci-fi tale, there’s something all too relevant about this story about conspiracies, paranoia, reality, trauma, mental health and deception. It’s an intense, grim, and strange film, but it’s also quite comedic at times. There’s a lot going on here for a mostly contained story and it keeps you glued to the screen all the way to the much buzzed about ending.
As is to be expected, this is an acting tour-de-force. Jesse Plemons has never been better and should be in the Awards conversation in my humble opinion. Emma Stone continues to make magic with Yorgos. Not only does she keep challenging herself as an actress, but her partnership with Yorgos yields incredible results. It’s always great to see actors collaborating with filmmakers for a string of films because more often than not you get to see some really special works of art ala Stone’s work with Yorgos. Aidan Delbis (who is an autistic man) makes his acting debut here as Don and gives a very natural and grounded performance. He has particularly great chemistry with Plemons here.
