Ultraman Arc- The Complete Series and The Clash Of Light And Evil Movie Blu-ray Review

SKIP it.

2024’s “Ultraman Arc” is a recent tokusatsu series from Tsuburaya Productions. The series contains 25 episodes and is followed by the movie “Ultraman Arc: The Clash Of Light And Evil.” The series revolves around the character of Yuma Hize who resides in Hoshimoto City. Yuma (who lost his parents) is working as a newbie investigator for SKIP (Scientific Kaiju Investigation And Prevention) alongside teammates Chief Hiroshi, Rin, the AI robot YouPi, and Shu Ishido (who works with the Global Defense Force). Yuma also happens to be be able to transform into Ultraman Arc to defeat any Kaiju or alien invaders terrorizing Hoshimoto City or Earth. Throughout the series, Ultraman Arc and SKIP encounter Kaiju such as Shagong, Nezutron, Homger, Internet Kanegon (a throwback to the “Ultra Q” monster), Noiseler, Hellnarak, Givas, Trigelos and the big bad Guilebaku. There are also stories about a dimensional rift, Dinosaur Professor Shinya Makino, imagination, a dream world and more. The film, meanwhile, finds Yuma encountering a space sage (Sascal) and an evil Arc clone known as Guil Arc.

Like many of the more modern Ultraman series, “Ultraman Arc” is sure to be divisive. Fans of the classic series ala the original 60s era Ultraman are unlikely to be as enamored with this new era of series which feels as if it’s running low on ideas. Younger audiences (which “Ultraman Arc” is ultimately aimed at) may find themselves drawn to this recent installment in the long-running Ultraman franchise. While there are some more adult moments about loss, family, and chosen family, there’s plenty of more cartoony and kid friendly scenes here particularly with the irritating YouPi robot (could they have picked a worse name?).

Of course, many folks will be tuning in to see the Ultraman vs. Kaiju battles. While there are some wild battles to be sure (and some nifty Kaiju costumes), the choreography is a bit lacking and the series in general focuses far more on characterization than Ultraman action. Make of that as you will.
