Splitsville Blu-ray Review

“Splitsville” comes across like a half-baked sitcom.
Scripted by Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin, “Splitsville” is a relationship comedy. The story begins with a not so happy married couple (Carey and Ashley). Ashley wants a divorce while Carey flees to his friend Paul’s beach house. Paul is in an open marriage with his wife Julie, but they aren’t so happy either. Paul is frequently away on business and his life is about to come crashing down due to illegal activities. One day, Carey and Julie hook up which further complicates both of their relationships. Carey decides to ask Ashley to have an open relationship, but she just winds up being with other guys instead of focusing on their own relationship. Paul and Julie’s marriage deteriorates as she finds herself getting closer to Carey. Will Carey and Julie become an item? Will Carey and Ashley and Paul and Julie find a way to repair their marriages? All is revealed in the end.
If “Splitsville” sounds like a second rate adult sitcom, that’s because it comes across like one. The film (which is directed by Michael Angelo Covino) thinks it’s a clever comedy about marriage, relationships, and monogamy, but it’s more eye-rolling than anything else. In general it’s an unfunny and unbelievable male wish fulfillment story in which writers/stars Kyle Marvin and Michael Angelo Covino somehow get to be with two of the sexiest women on the planet with Adria Arjona and Dakota Johnson. As if that wasn’t preposterous enough, the story is utterly clueless about open marriages, the characters (particularly Carey and Paul) are immature dolts, and the story shoves not so subtle metaphors down your throat (a car crash and a crumbling marriage!). One would think “Splitsville” would at least be sexy, but that couldn’t even be accomplished in this misfire.
The only thing this film has going for it is Adria Arjona and Dakota Johnson. Even with insipid material, they manage to further prove why they are two of the most electric actresses in the business.
