Together Blu-ray Review

A strange tone keeps “Together” from truly lifting off.
Written and directed by Michael Shanks, 2025’s “Together” is a body horror film. The story begins with couple Millie and Tim in a bad place. Tim lost his parents, he’s moving away from the city to the countryside with Millie who has landed a new job (which affects Tim’s music career aspirations), and Millie’s marriage proposal to Tim was nothing short of awkward. While exploring their new surroundings, Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. They eventually get out, but the water consumed in the cave seems to be having lasting effects on the couple. Not only does Tim find himself physically drawn to Millie wherever she is, but the two begin to literally stick together. What is happening to the couple? What’s the story behind the cave? How does a mysterious neighbor play into the story? All is revealed in the end.
“Together” could have easily been a gimmicky horror film with real-life married couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco playing the parts of Millie and Tim, but thankfully it’s not. This is also not just another body horror film (which is a hot subgenre after the success of “The Substance”). Yes, “Together” may bear a strong resemblance to the likes of fellow body horror film “Society,” but the plot is much different. This is very much a story about codependence. It may not be subtle, but the script’s exploration of this theme (and relationships in general) proves to be a fascinating one. Where the film struggles a bit is with the tone. There’s a strange balance of drama, eerie atmosphere, grief, horror, comedy, growing pains, and romance that doesn’t always work. Perhaps it’s a bit too ambitious for its own good. Whatever the case may be, the genres don’t always mix well together and it doesn’t quite stick the landing (no spoilers here).
Going back to Alison Brie and Dave Franco, the acting couple does a commendable job here in the starring roles. This could have been a trippy movie to make as a couple playing a troubled couple who becomes stuck together. Somehow they really sell it and make the characters seem more authentic.
