St. Denis Medical Season 1 Blu-ray Review

“St. Denis Medical” is devoid of laughs.
In the 18 episode debut season of 2024’s NBC comedy “St. Denis Medical,” the show revolves around the staff of, you guessed it, St. Denis Medical Center somewhere in Oregon. The story primarily revolves around the chaotic daily lives of staff members Alex (supervising nurse), Serena (registered nurse), Matt (newbie floor nurse), Ron (emergency physician), Bruce (trauma surgeon), Joyce (hospital executive director), and Val (nurse admin). The hospital working conditions are less than ideal with low pay, exhausting hours, and not enough staff members. Throughout the series, there are plots about an internet outage, the staff struggling to balance work and home life, staff quarrels, Joyce’s big plans for the Center, Christmas, blood donation, new hospital policies, Matt having a crush on Serena, a cat on the loose in the hospital, a singer, various patients (with various moods), a fundraising event
Created by Eric Ledgin and Justin Spitzer, “St. Denis Medical” (which just entered its 2nd season) is a comedy without an identity of its own. If you’ve seen “Scrubs,” “St. Elsewhere,” “The Office,” or “Abbott Elementary,” you’ve seen “St. Denis Medical.” It’s a mockumentary comedy with dramatic elements about nurses and doctors that is an amalgam of other better shows. It’s entirely safe, entirely routine, and entirely unfunny. We really need a moratorium on mockumentary comedy shows at this point. How many times can we see characters glance at the camera?
It’s a real shame the show never delivers as it features some talented cast members who are far more deserving of better material. Allison Tolman (of “Fargo” fame), Wendi McLendon-Covey (best known from “The Goldbergs”), and David Alan Grier (too many credits to list) have all done stellar work in the past. It’s tough to see them in a show that’s beneath them. Hopefully they are getting good money for this at least.
