Coyotes Blu-ray Review

All bark and no bite.

Written by Tad Daggerheart and Nick Simon, 2025’s “Coyotes” revolves around a family of three (Scott, his wife Liv and their daughter Chloe) living in the Hollywood Hills who are having a very bad day. The family has been drifting apart due to Scott being too consumed by his work, their home has a rat infestation, vicious and hungry coyotes are preying on them, and a fire has broken out around them. Now, the family, their neighbor Trip, and a sex worker visiting Trip (Julie) find themselves fighting for their lives. Can they survive? Will this horrifying ordeal bring the family together?

Directed by Colin Minihan (best known for co-directing the chilling “Grave Encounters”), “Coyotes” is a multi-genre film that was certainly ripe with potential. It’s a horror-comedy, a Hollywood satire, survival thriller, disaster movie, and “when animals attack” movie all rolled into one. Unfortunately, everything is surface level in this toothless film. Sure, there’s nasty gore and brutal death scenes, but so what? The CGI coyotes look phony and unnatural, the script squanders the concept, the drama is inert, the comedy is woefully unfunny, and the film itself feels like it’s barely a cut above an Asylum movie. It feels like the movie is on auto-pilot; it’s that formulaic.

Perhaps the most talked about aspect of “Coyotes” is that it stars real-life married couple Justin Long and Kate Bosworth as a married couple (Scott and Liv), but it feels like nothing more than stunt casting. The highlight here is Brittany Allen as the sex worker Julie. She has the most interesting character of the lot and tends to have the best comedic moments (which isn’t saying much).

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.35:1 1080p. How does it look? Expect a solid transfer that maintains the grain.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? A stellar, effective 5.1 track. The coyotes sound particularly sharp here.

Extras include a “Code 3” trailer and a basic featurette titled “Meet The Pack: Behind The Scenes With The Makers” that covers coyotes, the cast and characters, and more.
