CODA 4K UHD Review

“CODA” is a gem of a movie

Written and directed by Sian Heder, “CODA” (which stands for Child of a Deaf Adult) is a remake of the French-Belgian film “La Famille Bélier.” Set in the fishing town of Gloucester, Massachusetts, the story revolves around the Rossi family. Ruby is the only hearing person in her family as her father (Frank), mother (Jackie), and brother (Leo) are all deaf. The family has a fishing business and Ruby initially plans to join it post-high school. Her life takes a detour, however, when she joins the choir to be near her crush Miles. From here on out, she is encouraged by music teacher Mr. V to hone her singing skills and audition for the Berklee School Of Music. Ruby finds herself torn between collegiate aspirations and the family business though as her family needs her help with fishing business complications (and to act as an interpreter).

After making waves at the Sundance Film Festival in 2021, Apple TV’s “CODA” went on to win 3 Oscars in 2022 for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Troy Kotsur) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Sian Heder). It’s not hard to see why as it’s not only an important film about deaf representation, but it’s also a profoundly moving story about family, love, and communication wrapped around a coming-of-age story of Ruby trying to make plans about her future and forge her own path. “CODA” has everything you look for in a great movie. It’s full of emotion, rewarding dramatic moments, layered characters, and a generally strong script. Sure, there’s a couple moments that feel, well, a bit too scripted like the Coast Guard plot device, but it’s easy to overlook when the movie wins you over with ease.

The performances are really the heart of this movie. The film casts 3 deaf actors in the lead roles of Frank (Troy Kotsur), Jackie (Oscar winner Marlee Matlin), and Leo (Daniel Durant). The trio of performances are excellent, but it’s Troy Kotsur who wowed with a funny and heartwarming performance. Emilia Jones gives a stunning performance as Ruby. It’s nice to see her landing major roles in the likes of “Task” and “The Running Man” as of late. Mexican star Eugenio Derbez gives the best performance of his career as Mr. V.

Video/Audio:
