Tenacious D: The Complete Masterworks Volume 3 Blu-ray Review

You can never go wrong with Tenacious D.

For those in need of a Tenacious D fix, you’re in luck. MVD Visual has just released a new Blu-ray set titled “Tenacious D: The Complete Masterworks Volume 3.”  So, what all is included in this set? Allow me to inform you.

The centerpiece of this release is the full concert Live At The O2 Arena in London, England from 6/16/23. The setlist includes: “Overture,” “Kickapoo,” “Low Hangin’ Fruit,” “Rize Of The Fenix,” “Wonderboy,” “Tribute,” “Video Games,” “The Metal,” “Sax-a-Boom/Max-a-Boom,” “Roadie,” “Dude (I Totally Miss You),” “Beelzeboss (The Final Showdown),” “Double Team,” and the encore “Master Exploder,” “The Spicy Meatball Theme Song,” and “Fuck Her Gently.” This show was taken from the Tenacious D And The Spicy Meatball Tour and marked a high point in the band’s live career as this was a HUGE arena show. If you have yet to see the comedy rock gods live, this is a good sample of what to expect from Kyle Gass (AKA KG and Rage Kage) and Jack Black (AKA JB and Jables). The show is filled with skits, pyro, banter, a mix of classics and some newer material (no “Post-Apocalypto” songs oddly), stage props, costumes, and dancing. You also get a little back stage footage as well. Highlights here include a killer rendition of “The Metal,” a high energy “Beelzeboss (The Final Showdown)” and a great closer with “Fuck her Gently.”

Next up is the 6 chapter “Post-Apocalypto” musical animated series. For those that were underwhelmed by the album release, let me tell you that this is the way “Post-Apocalypto” should be experienced. The music and visuals go hand in hand here in this political sci-fi story about JB and KG surviving a hydrogen bomb drop. The two explore the new post-apocalyptic world, meet a two-headed dog, cave women, and a robot, travel to space and Egypt, and seek the Crystal of Gilgamesh.

Last, but not least there’s 7 music videos including the ultra catchy original “Video Games,” an ad for the fiber bar “Fiber d’Lish,” and rockin’ covers of Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time,” the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” classic “Time Warp,” Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game,” The Beatles classics “You Never Give Me Your Money/The End,” and a medley featuring songs from the classic rock band The Who.

As someone who has followed the band since the HBO series, Tenacious D has held a special place in my heart. They can make you laugh, they can make you rock out, and they always strive to entertain. This Blu-ray release is a proper showcase of the band’s modern era. If you treasure the first two Masterworks releases, there’s no reason you won’t adore this one. Not only do you get an epic full concert and a generous helping of music videos, but you finally get a home video release of “Post-Apocalypto.” Let’s hope a fourth volume isn’t too far away.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: Widescreen 1080p. How does it look? The concert, music videos, and animation look sharp in hi-def.

Audio Track: Unspecified DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? Everything sounds impressive here, but the concert is especially lively. It will put your speakers to work.

Extras include a DVD copy and a mini-poster.
