The Life Of Chuck Blu-ray Review

“The Life Of Chuck” is one of 2025’s best films.

Based on Stephen King’s short story of the same name, “The Life Of Chuck” is a difficult film to describe. The magic of the movie is knowing as little as possible. Seeing how the story unfolds in surprising ways is partially what makes it so rewarding. Without delving into spoilers too much, the film is narrated by Nick Offerman and is told in 3 acts in reverse order. As one might surmise, the plot chronicles the life of Chuck from childhood to adulthood. Unlike many of King’s works, this is not a horror story. It’s a drama with fantasy elements. Through the 3 act structure, we learn about the joys, the heartbreak and the loss that Chuck endured. Mortality plays a big role in the story as does family, love, music, and dancing. Sprinkled throughout the story are characters such as a teacher (Marty) and his ex-wife (Felicia), a busking drummer (Taylor), a dancing partner (Janice), a school crush (Cat), and Chuck’s grandparents. Who they are or how they play into the story, well, you’ll just have to experience that for yourself.

Having helmed “Gerald’s Game” and “Doctor Sleep,” writer/director Mike Flanagan tackles yet another Stephen King adaptation with “The Life Of Chuck.” This is arguably Flanagan’s most ambitious film as it’s quite the detour from his past work. Like his other King adaptations though, Flanagan knocks it out of the park.

In these dark times, “The Life Of Chuck” is the type of movie we need. It tugs at the heart strings, it’s beautiful, it’s uplifting, and it’s deeply emotional. It really runs the gamut of emotions and makes you think about your own life whether it be the little moments that stick with you, your family, or the loss you’ve endured.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of ‘Chuck’ is the story structure. As mentioned above, it’s told in 3 acts and in reverse. At first you will have no idea what is happening, but stick with it. Watching the film is the equivalent of a puzzle being put together. It all comes together to form a clear picture in the end.

The story may be the star, but there’s still an all-star cast here featuring the likes of Tom Hiddleston (although he’s in the movie less than you think), Chewitel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Mia Sara, Mark Hamill, Carl Lumbly, Jacob Tremblay (who has grown so much!), and a few surprise appearances. Hiddleston and his immaculate dancing is the heart of the movie, but Ejiofor, Gillan, Hamill and Tremblay are just as valuable.

Hopefully “The Life Of Chuck” finds a bigger audience on home video as the film was tragically lacking marketing and a proper theatrical release. It’s a real shame as this is easily one of the year’s best films.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 3 aspect ratios (one for each act) 2.39:1, 2.0:1, and 1.85:1 1080p. How does it look? In a word? Perfect. A 4K release is also available.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? Much like the film itself, the 5.1 track is brimming with life.

Extras:
* Commentary by Mike Flanagan.
* Teaser, trailer and 2 TV spots.
* 3 on-set interviews with Tom Hiddleston, Chewitel Ejiofor and Mark Hamill.
* “The Making Of The Life Of Chuck” featurette with interviews, set footage, and discussions about adapting Stephen King’s story and the film itself.
